Interview with Daniel Morris

Bio

We discovered Dan’s work on Unsplash - a striking image of an isolated house first caught our eye, the calm, gentle motion and subtle tones drew us - and we connected on Instagram

He’s a landscape and nature photographer based in Pembrokeshire, Wales - a coastal area with rugged natural beauty, which Dan cites as a key source of inspiration for him.

His work both captures and reflects the wonder of nature, from the mystery of rock formations to the drama of the night sky and carefully observed details of the natural world reclaiming itself, your eye will linger as you’re transported to a world likely very different from your own.

He shoots with the quintessential landscape photography camera, the Nikon D850 and recently expanded into aerial photography with a Mavic Air 2.

How did you first get into photography?

Dan

I’m a graphic designer by trade and many of the projects I’ve worked on have brought me into contact with amazing images. I think the combination of that and looking for alternative outlets for my creativity led me to take the plunge and give it a go.

theblowup

Which photographers did and do you draw inspiration from? Who are your photographic heroes?

Dan

For me Daniel Kordan is a big inspiration. The way he captures a sense of magic in his images is really amazing. I’m also a huge fan of Adam Gibbs, his work is often so serene and that’s definitely something I strive to capture in my own images.

Beyond photography, where do you draw your inspiration from?

Dan

It has to be where I live. The landscape of Pembrokeshire and Wales is utterly enthralling. I never have to go far to see something beautiful. It’s such an ancient and magical place, I think it’s that magic that I try to capture more than anything else and so just being outside here is inspiring.

theblowup

Which was your first camera?

Dan

A Nikon D3300.

How do you think about photography equipment? For some photographers it’s merely a set of tools, a means to an end. For others, the capabilities of the equipment help define what’s possible.

Dan

It’s complicated. As I’ve fallen more in love with photography I’ve certainly invested a lot more money on better gear and there’s been some trial and error in the sense that getting a new bit of kit doesn’t instantly make all of your photos way better. I think that investing time in learning and gaining confidence is way more valuable so it’s probably better to look at gear as a set of tools. For me I would value anything that gave me better quality of life in day to day use than something with better specs, especially when spending hours out in the elements.

theblowup

What’s the main equipment you use today?

Dan

My Nikon D850 and a selection of Nikon and Tamron lenses covering 16mm - 210mm. I’ve also recently acquired a Mavic Air 2 and I’m in love with it.

Lastly, what guidance would you give to people starting out with photography today?

Dan

Just get out there. Do what you love and don’t be afraid to do it your way.
